Life just gets in the way

I really don’t have time for all the things I want to do… however, approaching winter and a worn out SD card meant that Thermostat V2 had to jump to the top of the list. Still a work in progress (the touch screen isn’t reconnected and I still need to actually get the ‘touch’ working – also, need to add more ventilation holes to the new case – but the internal power supply, Pi Zero, temperature sensor and relay are all in place. I’ll post some pictures later….

IR Receiver

After a long break I finally got restarted on getting the TSOP38238 IR remote receiver connected up. This is now working for general IR receiver projects (planning on a remote control buggy once I add in the motor controllers) and also to control an OSMC media centre.

Scuppered by gremlins

Almost finished our Halloween 2016 project consisting of a couple of Rasperry Pis – one monitoring a camera for motion and the other reacting with spooky animated displays. Just got it working (so the nice friendly ghosts turn into angry menacing skulls whenever anyone approaches) and the projector (second hand very old aquired many years ago) stops working. That puts an end to that for this year. 😦

Ah well. Maybe next year (need to get myself a new projector!).

On the plus sude I now have the optics from the broken projector to piece together to make something else 🙂

Slowly slowly…

I’d forgotten just how much the Pi has moved on since its original incarnation… Using a RPi model B revision 1 for a Food Dehydrator project and having to update Raspbian as it’s well out of date and it’s sooooooo slow. Struggling along with just a single core and only 256Mb of memory. It’ll get there in the end.

Remote Control

After a long break I can now get back to more Pi projects. Ordered some IR receivers from RS and have some H-Bridge motor controllers on the way. Watch out for a mini Pi-bot Wars 🙂

Thermostat and GitHub

I’ve been trying to get my head around GitHub to upload the source for a pi-controlled Room Thermostat I’ve been working on – see https://github.com/baldingwizard/thermostatpi. I’m just learning with GitHub so it might not be accessible – please let me know if not!

The build is essentially just a mini OLED display and a temperature sensor, both connected via I2C, with a relay connected to a GPIO and wired into the central heating circuit in place of the usual thermostat. I’ll add more detailed instructions on how to put it together as time allows over the next couple of weeks. We’ve been running it for the best part of a year with only a couple of minor glitches due to power dropouts and a corrupted memory card.

Thought it might be interesting to add the occasional animated interlude too 🙂

Beehive Pi

I’ll be keeping an eye on this related blog as I’ve been thinking about doing something very similar when time allows (lack of time is always the problem at the moment!).

Pi-Zero

Managed to get a Pi-Zero on the cover of MagPi. It’s tiny!! Can’t believe what they’ve managed to produce for only £4. Can’t wait to give it a whirl… This one’s for Son of Balding Wizard who will be very excited!

Projects Page

I’ve added a Projects Page to collect together most of the current projects we have underway. I’ll try and add some detail for these in the near future…
